What are threaded rods?


Threaded rods, also referred to as studs, are helically-threaded rods made of metal, such as steel, brass and stainless steel, or sometimes plastic, like nylon. Similar to screws but without a head, these rods combine linear and rotational movement to create a strong fastening bond between materials, with the thread allowing for nuts and bolts to also be used when required. As these rods are designed to withstand very high levels of pressure and tension, they are commonly used in support systems among a variety of other applications.

What are they made of?


These threaded rods are made of A4 stainless steel, a steel oxide with 18% chromium and 8% zinc content, with an additional 2-3% of molybdenum. The chromium gives the steel a resistance to corrosion, and both chromium and zinc make the steel resistant to sterilising solutions, foodstuffs and inorganic chemicals. The molybdenum provides additional resistance, granting the ’A4’ grade to this type of stainless steel.


A4 is often referred to as ’marine grade’ stainless steel as it has the highest level of corrosion resistance, making it suitable for underwater (marine) installations and applications. These rods are produced to DIN975 standards and are suitable for use in most construction applications, as well as medical, chemical, electronic and food-related applications.

Threaded rods have many applications, acting as a pin to fasten, hold or connect two materials together. The threading on the rod provides a tightening action, using friction to hold the fastening together.
